Feel the Burn: Making the 2012 Heat Wave Matter Mark Hertsgaard July 25, 2012

(from The Nation, July 25, 2012)
I have been following this summer’s droughts and heat waves, one of the three worst in the last ten or so years, and so far the worst. I am extremely concerned as I am sure many of you all are about this, and the failure of this year’s “Durban Climate change convention’ in South Africa, to make any changes or headway in this dire situation.

Making 2012 Heat Wave matter

Summer 2012 has broken thousands of records, bringing misery and worse to millions of Americans. By mid-July the death toll was nearing 100, said Wunderground.com. That is certain to rise—not just because the forecast is for hot weather to persist but because, as in 2003, many heat wave deaths are epidemiologically traceable only well after the fact. Meanwhile, the United States is suffering the worst drought in fifty years, leading the Department of Agriculture to declare more than 1,000 counties—about one of every three in the nation—natural disaster zones. The reverberations will be global and may include violence.

The ‘Bus for Progress’ from the ‘Stop the Frack Attack’ march, on Saturday, 7/28/12

Bus for Progress chants from the ‘Stop the Frack Attack’ march
Saturday, July 28, 2012, US Capitol

Above is a short video of the end of the march Saturday, and the very vocal ‘Bus for Progress’  group from central New Jersey , who so kindly gave Kathie and I a ride for most of the march, escaping from the heat. The bus also picked up several other elderly who had collapsed along side the march route as we went along.

Overview of the rally in the beginning of the ‘StoptheFrackAttack’ at the Capitol

You will see Kathie A. and a quick view of Padma (MoveOn Sullivan ) and others from MoveOn and various other progressive groups a the “StoptheFrackAttack’ march on Saturday, July 28, 2012, on the ‘grotto’ area outside the US Capitol.

Another successful coalition of many groups as far as Ohio and North Carolina, joined many from NY, NJ, PA and the Northeast, including, ‘NYagainstfracking.org’. ‘350.org’ (Bill McKibben), the ‘Sierra Club’, our sponsor, ‘Catskill Mountainkeeper’.  Thanks for the opportunity to Carolyn and the rest. 23 Sullivan residents, including myself, were able to go. Thanks to your fabulous bus driver, Andy, who was ‘longsuffering’. A long but successful day, despite dangerous heat, for many, and the long day.  Democracy now had a short clip from the march today, (Monday, July 30), announcing thousands in the crowd.

Reporting , Bob Dorn

All fracked up: Manufacturers, energy companies shift gears | GreenBiz.com

1- Contamination of potable ground water with methane or traces of fracking chemicals; 2-surface water pollution from dumping hyper-salty post-frack wastewater into rivers; 3-harmful air pollution levels at fracking sites and nearby; 4-methane leakage, which may massively boost the greenhouse gas impact of fracking; and 5-earthquakes caused by the injection of post-frack wastewater deep underground.
/ Just some of the things Fracking does.

Frack Free Nation – Occupy with Love, June 5th, 2012, At the Capitol, NY

Frack Free Nation.

Its next Tuesday, June 5th, and should be a nice peaceful protest. Its getting closer to the time when a decision will be made on Fracking in NYS. I believe we need to be vigilant and not let the Governor forget about this & know how many New Yorkers (overwhelmingly) oppose Fracking in our state. I am going to try to go to this event. Feel free to contact me, (Bob Dorn) at 8453452160 or 8458265925, should you wish to carpool to Albany for this event.
